Kleinvernich Castle

Kleinvernich Castle, also known as Gürtzgensburg, is the remnant of a moated castle on the Lommersumer Mühlengraben near the Erft in the Kleinvernich district of Weilerswist (Am Klarenhof) in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Kleinvernich moated castle is still surrounded by a complete moat today and is used and inhabited as an agricultural estate.

Today, the former castle complex, a so-called "Hoffeste" (fortified farm) without earlier knightly status, presents itself as a four-winged farmstead. Old drawings from 1705 suggest that the castle had an outer bailey but that the small half-timbered manor house was already dilapidated. At the beginning of the 18th century, the late Gothic small castle was completely dilapidated. In 1781, the farmstead was rebuilt.

In 1610, the castle was mentioned as being in the possession of the Lords of Gürtzgen and lost its eligibility for the Landtag (state parliament) in 1730 because it did not meet the requirements.
