Jüngersdorf Castle

There are sources that date the predecessor building of Haus Jülich to the 7th century. It was not until around 1563 that it can be proven with certainty that the von Lövenich family, who had been settled in the area for two generations, was enfeoffed with the estate. A good 100 years later, in the middle of the 17th century, it passed to the von Wyhe family through the marriage of a daughter. Whether they needed money or whether they could not find enough employees to cultivate the land, the family sold the estate in 1762 to a court counselor named Kramer. He resold it to Baron Balduin Franz Karl von Merode-Houffalize zu Frenz. He died in 1803, and Haus Jülich passed to his sister Regina Petronella Franziska. Without direct descendants, she bequeathed the estate to her rent master Graef, and he was followed by a whole series of owners.

It can be assumed with reasonable certainty that the courtyard, surrounded on all four sides by buildings, was an older complex from the 15th/16th century. The moats common at that time were gradually filled in, certainly also to protect the thick foundations from penetrating water. Part of the younger residential building at the northeastern corner stands on an old tower. The base consists of mighty ashlar blocks; on the north side, walled-up loopholes and old windows divided by a transom are faintly visible. Clemen describes an ashlar block integrated into the masonry, whose Roman inscription "Mercurio averno vicini v.v." was already difficult to read around 1910. Also at the opposite corner, as can be seen from a few remains, a solid stone tower must have stood. Haus Jülich was therefore not only an agricultural estate but also a well-fortified and secure accommodation.
