Holtzbrinck Castle
Holtzbrinck Castle is a meeting place in the city center of Altena. It can also be rented for celebrations and conferences. The name "Castle" was given to the building due to its castle-like construction.
Holtzbrinck Castle is the oldest bourgeois house in the city. The building was first mentioned in a document in 1643, when the rent master Georg Holtzbrinck acquired it. However, the oldest part of the house probably dates back to the 16th century.
After the death of Georg Holtzbrinck, his son Stephan Johann Holtzbrinck took over the building. He made significant changes to the building between 1673 and 1689, resulting in its current form.
The city of Altena acquired the building in 1972. It was then restored over many years and subsequently declared a community center in 1976. In 1980 and 1981, an underground car park was built in front of the castle, on top of which is a Rococo-style garden located in front of the castle.
