Hohenklingen Castle majestically overlooks Stein am Rhein in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. This historic castle complex, situated on a narrow molasse ridge, is remarkable for having been spared from wartime destruction throughout its history, largely preserving its medieval appearance.

History+

Around 1200, Walter von Klingen, the bailiff of St. Georgen Monastery, built a residential tower on this site. It is assumed that the Zähringer, earlier bailiffs, already possessed a wooden predecessor structure with a defensive ditch. The Hohenklingen family split in the early 14th century. Financial difficulties led to the sale of a share to Austria in 1359, which was then leased back. In 1419 and 1433, Kaspar von Klingenberg, lord of Hohentwiel Fortress, acquired the entire complex. In 1457, the castle came into the possession of the citizens of Stein am Rhein. It subsequently served as an important outpost for Zurich's high watchtowers and played a military role in the Swabian War (1499) and the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). After the 18th century, it lost strategic importance. During World War II, the tower housed an observation post. After the abolition of the high watch service in 1838, the castle faced decay but was saved by the establishment of a sanatorium and inn.

Location+

Hohenklingen Castle is located in Stein am Rhein in the Stein district, canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 589 m above sea level.
