Hikone Castle, a prominent example of Japanese fortress architecture, rises in the city of Hikone in Shiga Prefecture. This historic complex is renowned for being one of the few originally preserved castles in Japan.
History+
The origins of Hikone Castle date back to 1603, when Ii Naokatsu, son of Daimyō Ii Naomasa, commissioned its construction. Parts of the fortifications were originally built in 1575 for Ōtsu Castle and later moved to Hikone by the Ii family. The castle was completed in 1622. After Naokatsu's lands were confiscated by the Tokugawa Shogunate, his brother Naotake took control of the Ōmi region and was able to complete the construction using stones from the former Sawayama Castle. When the Meiji era began in 1868, Hikone Castle escaped the destruction that befell many other castles only through the personal intervention of the Emperor, who visited the area. The castle's main tower was recognized as a National Cultural Property in 1952.
