Hausneindorf Castle
Hausneindorf Castle is a hilltop castle on a 112 m above sea level plateau above the Selke in the Hausneindorf district (Wallstraße) of the municipality of Selke-Aue in the Harz district (Saxony-Anhalt).
The "Castle of Neundorf" (Hausneindorf) was founded around 1140 by Henry the Lion (County of Blankenburg), destroyed in 1168 and rebuilt in 1172. Later owned by the Prince-Bishopric of Halberstadt, the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1310 as a pledged possession of the County of Regenstein. From 1429 to 1573, the castle was pledged to the Lords of Hoym.
After its conversion into a Prussian state domain in 1711, agricultural use permanently changed the appearance of the castle.
Description+
Within the castle complex, surrounded by wide dry moats and with a diameter of about 175 meters, was the round core castle, surrounded by a ring wall and with a diameter of about 100 meters, protected by a 10 to 15 meter wide zwinger.
The castle could be reached from the Selke lowlands via two bridges and its eastern main access into the outer bailey, protected by a double gate system.
The northwestern part of the core castle formed a 40 by 40 meter castellum with the still preserved 10 by 25 meter Romanesque palas in the west and the still preserved square 7.5 by 7.5 meter wide and 27 meter high Gothic-extended keep in the southeast corner, which still shows traces of a Renaissance spiral staircase.
