The current Gradačac Castle was built on the foundations of a former Roman fort. Between 1765 and 1821, the imposing, 18-meter-high walls that characterize the appearance of the complex were constructed. A decisive event in its history was the year 1831, when the Turkish occupiers were successfully expelled, giving the castle a special symbolic meaning for Bosnian history.
