Glimmingehus Castle

Glimmingehus Castle, one of Scandinavia's best-preserved medieval castles, rises majestically in the southern Swedish province of Skåne. This impressive structure, marking the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, is renowned for its defensive architecture and rich history.
History+
The foundation stone of Glimmingehus Castle was reportedly laid on May 2, 1499, initiated by Jens Holgersen Ulfstand, a Danish governor and later admiral of the realm. The Westphalian master builder Adam van Düren was responsible for the design. The castle was primarily conceived as a defensive structure against peasant uprisings and is characterized by its uncompromising focus on security, including various trap systems. Although its exterior harks back to medieval traditions, archaeological finds suggest a modern interior with luxurious items such as Spanish ceramics and Venetian glass. After the death of its builder, the castle temporarily served as a grain store. During the Scanian War, demolition was considered to prevent its use by Danish troops, but it was not carried out due to high costs. A moat, whose existence is documented as early as the 17th century, was restored in the 20th century.
