Geyen Castle

The Geyener Water Castle is an approximately square complex. The arrangement of the buildings reflects its old function as a customs post on the border of the Electoral Cologne and Jülich territories. At the northern and western corners of the courtyard are a round and a rectangular tower. The inner courtyard is only accessible via a stone bridge on the north side, as the castle was formerly surrounded on all four sides by moats fed by the Pulheimer Bach. The slots for the chains of a former drawbridge are also still visible.

Except for one half-timbered building, all buildings are made of brick.

A knight's estate has been known here from a documentary mention since 1337. This estate is the predecessor of today's Junkerburg and functioned as a customs post on the Jülich-Cologne border. When the old Tollhof or Canishof was sold in 1443 by its owner Johann von Canis to the Cologne patrician family von Judde, they demolished it and built today's Junkerburg.

After a fire in 1664, the castle was rebuilt in brick in the Baroque style. This building has been preserved to this day.

After the von Juddes, the Lords of Frentz and von Graß (from Fliesteden) were owners of the castle. From 1784, when the estate again went to a Lord of Frentz, it was managed by a tenant farmer. In 1855, the last noble owner sold the estate; today it is in bourgeois possession.
