Gatersleben Castle
Gatersleben Castle is a partially preserved moated castle at about 110 meters above sea level in the Selke floodplain, on the northern edge of Gatersleben, a district of the town of Seeland in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt.
The castle was probably built by the Lords of Gatersleben as early as the 9th century and was mentioned in 964 as a circular castle surrounded by moats. In 1179 the castle was mentioned as "castrum Gatersleve" and in 1262 as "castrum Gaterslebe". From 1179 to 1183, a square keep was added on behalf of the Bishop of Halberstadt. The bishops used the castle to hold their summer synods. In the 13th century, an additional floor was added to the castle as a knight's hall, in 1460 it was raised with arrow slits, and in 1693 the current roof truss was added.

The castle complex had a very large outer bailey, of which fortified walls still bear witness today, and was later converted into an agricultural operation. The core castle was also significantly rebuilt, with the Romanesque residential tower (keep) retaining its shape with its high entrance at a height of seven meters. Furthermore, the moats are preserved. Today the castle is used as a municipal administration and for residential purposes.
