Flechtingen Castle

Flechtingen Castle is located in an artificially dammed lake in the town center and was built on a greywacke rock. From the 14th century until 1945, the original castle was the ancestral seat of the noble family Schenck von Flechtingen. Its current form dates back to transformations in the 19th century. The oldest parts of the building were built around 1300, including the curtain wall, the palas, and the keep. The first major changes were made in 1483 with the relocation of the castle to the west. At the end of the 15th century, late Gothic architectural elements were added, and 100 years later, the complex underwent changes in the Renaissance style. Around 1600, the former drawbridge was replaced by a dam access. During the last renovations between 1840 and 1890, the moated castle received its historicist-neo-Gothic appearance.

After the forced expropriation of the castle by the communists in 1945, it initially served as refugee accommodation. Afterwards, it was used as a convalescent home before it was taken over by the border troops of the People's Army in 1958. From 1964 to 1993, the castle was a retirement home. Subsequently, there were attempts to convert the castle into a hotel, which have not yet led to any results.
