Endenich Castle
Endenich Castle in the Bonn district of Endenich dates back to the Middle Ages. Today, only the outer bailey remains. It is listed as a historical monument.
The castle is located in the center of Endenich. The Endenicher Bach flows nearby, to which the castle moat was formerly connected. The street passing the castle was formerly called "Baachjass". Today this street is called Am Burggraben. The castle has the house number 18.
Around 1200, two knights residing in Endenich Castle were first mentioned in documents. It is presumed that the castle dates back to an estate acquired by the Cassius Abbey in 1135, but this is no longer verifiable. The main castle was destroyed at the latest in the War of the Palatine Succession (1688–1697), possibly even earlier.
Since 1619, the castle was owned by the von Weichs family from Rösberg. In 1690, it was sold to the Electoral Cologne Court Chamber Director Heinrich von Lapp. His family inhabited the castle until 1812, when they sold it to the Legation Councillor Karl Wilhelm Nose. In 1830, the District Administrator Ludwig Eberhard von Hymmen bought it again.
On December 4, 2006, Endenich Castle was entered into the list of monuments of the city of Bonn.
Current Use+
Parts of the former castle grounds now belong to the Karl-Simrock-Hauptschule and a public sports and park facility. The manor house accommodates a branch of the city library and an event room for associations. The street wing houses Firefighting Unit 14 – Endenich of the Volunteer Fire Department and a senior citizens' meeting place. Since 1995, the Trägerverein Endenicher Burg e.V. (TEB) has been responsible for the use of Endenich Castle by Endenich associations. Furthermore, the supporting association obtained the registration as a historical monument, which was approved by the Lower Monument Authority in December 2006.
In the inner courtyard of the castle stands a sweet chestnut tree over 130 years old, with a trunk circumference of over 4 meters. Together with eight other trees in the park, it represents a registered natural monument.
