Eketorp Castle
Eketorp Castle on the Swedish island of Öland is a fascinating reconstruction of an ancient refuge castle. It is located in the barren landscape of Stora Alvaret and offers a unique insight into early Scandinavian history.
History+
The origins of Eketorp Castle date back to the Germanic Iron Age around 300 AD, when the first complex was built. In the 5th century, this first circular castle, 57 meters in diameter, was demolished and replaced by a larger complex with an 80-meter diameter and about 50 cells. After a three-hundred-year period of disuse, the ring wall was rebuilt in the 11th century, with the original stone buildings inside being replaced by wooden houses. The complex was used until the 13th century and then abandoned.

Eketorp Castle is located in Eketorp, within the municipality of Mörbylånga in the Kalmar district of Sweden. It stands at an elevation of approximately 9 meters above sea level.
