Bollendorf Castle
Bollendorf Castle is a castle in the Southern Eifel on the Sauer river in Bollendorf in the Bitburg-Prüm district, Rhineland-Palatinate. It stands on a rock in the Sauer river plain on the foundations of a former Roman fortification. Until the end of the 18th century, the castle was the seat of a sub-provostry belonging to the Echternach provostry, which administered the Bollendorf, Ernzen, and Irrel manors from there. The complex is now privately owned and is used as a hotel with holiday apartments and a restaurant.
The exact time of the castle's construction is not known. In 716, ownership passed to Echternach Abbey.
In 1619, Abbot Peter Richardt converted the southwest corner into a residential building by installing a circular spiral staircase through all floors. From 1739, the building was expanded by Abbot Gregorius Schouppen and the manor house was converted into a Baroque castle; the portal bears the year 1776.
Complex+
Only the curtain wall and remnants of a round tower from the medieval castle complex have been preserved. The tower, equipped with T-shaped loopholes, sits on a rock. From more recent times, a castle hall, a castle great hall, and a knight's room have been preserved.
