Blomendal Castle

The origins of Burg Blomendal trace back to the 13th century when the Knights of Oumünde erected an initial castle complex on a castle hill in the Lüßum area. However, this structure was destroyed in 1305 during the Bremen Council Feud. In 1354, the second Burg Blomendal was rebuilt by the same knights. Over time, Diderich von Reken and Johann von der Hude were also recorded as owners. In 1436, the knights Johann and Otto von Borch sold the complex for 1400 Rhenish guilders to the Bremen Council. Bremen subsequently leased the castle to deserving councilors or mayors. Diedrich Hoyer, a Bremen mayor, moved in as a tenant in 1542, and his son Erich Hoyer commissioned the ceiling painting still visible today. From the 16th century onwards, the castle primarily served as the administrative and judicial seat of the Blomendal office. Prior to the First Bremen-Swedish War, the castle was occupied by Swedish troops in 1653. Through the Second Stade Convention in 1742, it was detached from Bremen's influence and assigned to the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg. With the Prussian annexation of the Kingdom of Hanover in 1866, Blumenthal came under Prussian administration, and in 1884, the district office of Blumenthal was established here. In 1939, Burg Blomendal reverted to Bremen as part of Blumenthal's incorporation.

Burg Blomendal is located in Bremen-Blumenthal, within the city area of Bremen, in the federal state of Bremen, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 7 meters above sea level.

Following extensive restorations in the 1970s, the castle now houses a kindergarten and is utilized for numerous cultural events such as concerts, stage plays, lectures, private celebrations, conferences, and exhibitions. The 19th-century annex building and the castle complex have been listed as historical monuments since 1973.
