Blomberg Castle
Blomberg Castle is a castle in the town of Blomberg in the Lippe district of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The rulers in Blomberg were the Lords of Lippe and the Counts of Schwalenberg and Sternberg. It is presumed that both jointly erected the castle in the 13th century, which initially served only as a fortress. Simon I (1275–1344) chose Blomberg as his residence and had the castle expanded into a palatial residence. He and his successors frequently alternated between their residences in Blomberg and Brake.
After extensive destruction in the Soest Feud (1414–1463), the castle was rebuilt as a two-story, three-wing complex. It then temporarily served as a residence for the Lords of Lippe.

The town and castle were fortified all around, with the castle additionally secured by an embankment and moat. To the west and south, steep slopes offered natural protection, while to the east and north, the town was surrounded by walls, moats, embankments, and even thorn hedges. Additionally, there were six defensive towers and, in front of the gates, Zwinger (outer bailey) and Landwehren (defensive earthworks). Of the town fortifications, the Niedere Tor (Lower Gate) and parts of the town wall are still preserved today.
The ground floor of the central wing of the three-winged castle complex was built in 1562 under Count Bernhard VII, while the half-timbered upper floor was added in 1569. The most important master builder was Hermann Wulff from Lemgo, who designed the Utlucht (oriel window) facing the inner courtyard from white sandstone. Wulff also carried out work on the Lemgo town hall, the Hexenbürgermeisterhaus (Witch Mayor's House), and Brake Castle. Today, parts of the castle are used as a hotel and restaurant.
