Bibra Castle
History of the Castle+
A castle in Bibra was first mentioned in 1119 as being owned by the Lords of Bibra (Rubertus de Bybera). During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the complex was destroyed and rebuilt in 1558. In 1646, the castle burned down during the Thirty Years' War and was subsequently rebuilt. The Lords of Bibra were elevated to Imperial Knights in 1805. In 1808, the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen acquired the castle. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed by the communists. Today, the castle is privately owned.
