Berg Castle

Berg Castle was originally a moated castle from the 12th century. It is located on the northeastern edge of the Eifel in Mechernich (district Berg) in the Euskirchen district and consists of a free-standing castle house with a tower and a former outer bailey located to the northeast.

Berg Castle and the municipality of Berg are already mentioned in 699. In this year, Saint Willibrord received the "villa" Berg as a gift from Irmina of Oeren, a relative of the Carolingian house.

Below the current lowland castle, there are probably remains of the old castle from the late 9th century as a hill in the valley. It served as a refuge and protective castle against possible raids at the two historical road routes meeting here. In the 14th century, the noble family of Berg settled there, expanding the castle and land into a knight's seat. In the 18th century, the castle changed ownership to Baron Clemens August von Syberg zu Eicks and has since served as a tenant farm.
