Barciany (Barten) Castle
Barcianach Castle, once known as Barten Teutonic Castle, is an impressive historical structure of the Teutonic Order. It stands in Barciany in the Warmian-Masurian region of northern Poland and is distinguished by its eventful history and well-preserved elements.
History+
The origins of Barcianach Castle date back to 1325, when the Brandenburg Commandery of the Teutonic Order erected it on the site of an earlier Prussian refuge castle. Initially, it served as an administrative seat for vogts and administrators. Under Grand Master Winrich von Kniprode, the castle was significantly upgraded to a commandery in 1377 and subsequently extensively expanded. Heinrich von Plauen resided at the castle from 1402 to 1406 in his capacity as administrator. During the Thirteen Years' War, the Teutonic castle suffered severe fire damage but was subsequently rebuilt. Financial difficulties forced the Order to mortgage the castle in 1480. From 1533, it served as the seat of a district administrator and from 1842 as an agricultural estate. In World War I, the north wing burned out. After 1945, the owners were dispossessed by the communists, and the castle became state property. In 2000, the former Teutonic castle was auctioned off and subsequently stood empty.
