Anstel Castle
Anstel Castle is a moated castle in the Rommerskirchen district of Anstel (Wasserburgstraße 30) in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss in North Rhine-Westphalia. The moated castle is the oldest secular monument in Rommerskirchen.
In 1155, the castle was first mentioned in a document by a "Sigefridus de Anstele". In the middle of the 12th century, a family "de Anstele" was named as the owner of the castle, who called themselves "Knights of Anstel" from 1209 and only "Squires" after 1270.
In 1371, the Archbishop of Cologne enfeoffed the squire of Anstel, Heinrich mit dem Barte, with the castle, who thereafter called himself "von Anstel".
Around 1400, the castle came into the possession of Heinrich von Siegenhofen through purchase, whose family owned the castle until their male line died out, and whose descendants sold it around 1911 to Theodor Jochemich. It has remained in the possession of the Jochemich family to this day, who converted it into a baroque residential complex in 1722 while preserving its original structure.
Current Use+
Today, there is an agricultural business, and the castle complex houses an equestrian center with stables, riding hall, and riding arenas.
Description+
From the castle courtyard, a brick bridge, which suggests an earlier drawbridge, leads over the moat from the outer bailey to the main castle, whose entrance displays a coat of arms stone with the year "1722". The current farm buildings in the outer bailey date from the 20th century.
The two-story residential building with windows and plinth framed in sandstone (former residential tower) has a slate-covered mansard hip roof.
