Althofen Castle

Althofen Castle (Frohnfeste) is already mentioned in 953 as being in the possession of the Bishops of Salzburg.

The castle was originally built as a Romanesque fortress. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous transformations and additions, reflecting various architectural styles. The oldest parts, particularly the foundation walls, date back to the 10th century. In the 13th century, a Gothic chapel was added, and the defensive walls were reinforced. The most significant changes occurred in the 16th century when the castle was converted into a Renaissance residence. During this period, large windows were installed, and the interior was decorated with elaborate frescoes.

In the 18th century, Baroque elements were introduced, including a grand staircase and stucco decorations. The castle's current appearance is largely shaped by these Baroque modifications, which gave it a more palatial character. Despite these changes, the original Romanesque and Gothic structures are still visible and contribute to the building's unique charm.

In the 16th century, it was acquired by the noble family von Khevenhüller, who initiated the Renaissance transformations. Later, it passed through various aristocratic hands, including the families von Orsini-Rosenberg and von Goëss. Each owner left their mark on the castle, contributing to its rich history and diverse architectural styles.

Today, Althofen Castle is privately owned but occasionally opens its doors for special events and guided tours. Parts of the castle are used for cultural events, exhibitions, and private functions. The castle grounds, including a historic garden, are sometimes accessible to the public during these events. Efforts are continuously made to preserve the historical substance of the building and to make it accessible to a wider audience, allowing visitors to experience its fascinating history firsthand.
