Bremen Cathedral

The origins of Bremen Cathedral date back to 789, when a first wooden church was built on this site, only to be destroyed shortly thereafter during the Saxon Wars. A stone successor building began in 805, the remains of which can still be found in the nave today. This building housed the famous Bishop Ansgar from 845 to 865. In the 11th century, under Bishop Adalbrand, the conversion to a Salian cathedral began, but it fell victim to a city fire in 1041. Reconstruction took place under Adalbert's leadership, who drew inspiration from the Old Cologne Cathedral and the Cathedral of Benevento and employed Lombard craftsmen. In the 13th century, the nave was given a ribbed vault and the twin-tower facade was created. In the 14th century, chapels were added and the north tower received a Gothic spire. The Reformation led to a turbulent history from 1522 onwards, with closures and confessional disputes. In 1638, the south tower collapsed, but shortly thereafter the cathedral was reopened as a Lutheran parish church. In the late 19th century, extensive renovations gave the cathedral its current appearance with the twin-tower facade and a Neo-Romanesque crossing tower.

Bremen Cathedral is located in Bremen, in the state of Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 18 meters above sea level.

Today, Bremen Cathedral is accessible to visitors and can be toured. It continues to serve as a place of worship for the Evangelical Lutheran St. Peter's Cathedral parish and has been a protected monument since 1973.
