The origins of Blarney Castle date back to the 10th century, when a wooden fortress was built on this site. This was replaced by a stone stronghold in 1210. After its destruction, the castle was rebuilt as a family residence by the King of Munster, Dermot McCarthy, with the keep from that period still standing. In 1646, Oliver Cromwell's troops captured the castle, but the inhabitants escaped with their valuables through a system of three tunnels. Fifteen years later, with the accession of Charles II to the throne, the McCarthy family regained possession of the castle. In 1690, Irish nobles were dispossessed, and the McCarthys were forced to leave Blarney Castle. In 1703, Sir James Jefferyes, the Governor of Cork, acquired the estate.
