Berlin Palace

The origins of the Berlin City Palace date back to 1442, when Margrave Frederick II initiated its construction on the Spree Island in Alt-Cölln. In the 16th century, Elector Joachim II replaced the medieval complex with a Renaissance building, designed by Konrad Krebs and executed by Caspar Theiss. Under Elector Frederick III, who later became King Frederick I, a comprehensive Baroque reconstruction began in 1699 by Andreas Schlüter, transforming the palace into a representative royal residence. In the 19th century, the central dome above the Eosander Portal was added by Friedrich August Stüler and Albert Dietrich Schadow, based on designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The palace was the scene of important historical events, including the March Revolution of 1848 and Karl Liebknecht's proclamation of the republic in 1918. Severely damaged in World War II, the remaining building was demolished in 1950 by resolution of the SED, to make way for Marx-Engels-Platz and later the Palace of the Republic. Since 2013, the palace has been rebuilt, incorporating reconstructed facades and its original volume.

The Berlin City Palace is located in the Berlin-Mitte district of the city of Berlin in Germany, at an elevation of approximately 29 meters above sea level.

A reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace is currently underway on its historic site, which will house the Humboldt Forum. Visitors can observe the progress of the new building, which reconstructs the original volume and essential facade elements of the former palace.
