Berlin Cathedral

The origins of a house of worship at this location date back to the 15th century, when a chapel in the electoral palace was consecrated in 1450, later elevated to a cathedral. After Elector Joachim II had the Dominican church south of the palace converted into the new court church in 1535 and consecrated in 1536, his conversion to the Lutheran faith in 1539 marked the transformation into a Protestant cathedral. Due to dilapidation, this building was demolished, and a new Baroque structure was erected at the current site between 1747 and 1750. In the early 19th century, Karl Friedrich Schinkel redesigned the cathedral in the Neoclassical style. The current monumental building was constructed between 1894 and 1905 according to plans by Julius Raschdorff, inspired by Italian High Renaissance and Baroque, at the instigation of Emperor Wilhelm II. During World War II, the cathedral was severely damaged, with the dome collapsing in 1944. The restoration of the exterior began in 1975, with the demolition of the Memorial Church. The main church was reopened in 1993, and the restoration of the dome mosaics was completed in 2002.
