Bergkloster Heiligenstadt

The Bergkloster Heiligenstadt, situated in the Thuringian Eichsfeld region, is a significant sacred building that has shaped the area since its foundation. It serves as a spiritual center and houses the European province of the Sisters of St. Mary Magdalene Postel. The complex combines historical architecture with a vibrant monastic tradition.
History+
The origins of the Bergkloster date back to 1862, when Sister Placida established the first German branch of the order in Heiligenstadt. The sisters, also known as the Heiligenstadt School Sisters, made the monastery the German motherhouse. During the Kulturkampf, the sisters had to temporarily leave Heiligenstadt but returned in 1887. The division of Germany complicated the work of the German branch, founded in 1920, leading to the relocation of the Generalate to Bestwig in 1968. In 2003, the order's Generalate returned to Heiligenstadt. Archaeological finds from the 8th and 9th centuries, discovered during renovations in the 1990s, attest to the long settlement history of the Stiftsberg.
Location+
The monastery is located in Heilbad Heiligenstadt, a town in the Eichsfeld region of Thuringia, Germany. It is situated on the historic Stiftsberg, providing a prominent presence in the landscape.
On site+
Today, the monastery complex includes convent buildings, a monastery chapel, a kindergarten, and a monastery garden with a Way of the Cross. Between 1856 and 1870, several adjacent buildings on the Stiftsberg were acquired, and between 1893 and 1905, they were converted into a unified complex. The religious community continues to sponsor various educational institutions in Heiligenstadt, including the Bergkindergarten and the Bergschule St. Elisabeth with a vocational school. The gymnasium of the Bergschule is now under the patronage of the Diocese of Erfurt.
