Benedikt Castle

To be privately owned

The Benediktschlössl, also known as Lebzelterhaus, Kriossen- or Berneggerschlössl, is located in the municipality of Hallein in the district of Hallein in Salzburg (Krautgasse 1).

The building contains an older part from the 16th century. The house belonged to St. Peter's Abbey and was issued by it. It is first mentioned in a document in 1662 that the house and garden were granted by hereditary right to Petrus Pachler, official of St. Peter, and his wife Maria Jakobe Faberin. Further owners were Ruepp Riedl (1664), Michael Fuchsberger and his wife Anna Magdalena (1673), Georg Anngerer and Helena Wisenauer (1692), Georg Kreis (1700, by profession gingerbread maker and wax chandler). After the death of Marie Elisabeth Khreiss, it passed to her daughter in 1706, then to Johann Michael Rieder (1745) and after 1773 to his heirs, in 1822 to Franz Wallner. Since all of these were gingerbread makers and wax chandlers, the building is also called Lebzelterhaus (a wax bleaching facility was therefore built in the garden). In 1877 Josef Breymauf acquired it, in 1855 Maria Kobercz. In 1866 the house came to the Benedikt family, in whose possession it still is today.

The building was located outside the walled city area of Hallein. It may have been built at the same time as the Augustinian monastery in 1683/84, which is indicated by its rounded west front. The house consists of the rounded, two-story main building and two equally high wing buildings along Krautgasse. It encloses a courtyard open to the south. On the ground floor there are barrel vaults with lunettes. On the upper floor there are simple baroque stucco ceilings; one room is decorated with 17th-century wall paintings (vertical fields, marbled or filled with grisaille painting depicting landscapes and pastoral scenes).

The Benediktschlössl is privately owned and cannot be visited.
