Seitenstetten Abbey
The Benedictine Abbey of Seitenstetten is a historic monastery in Lower Austria, distinguished by its long history and picturesque location. It is a significant religious and cultural center in the Amstetten region.
History+
The origins of Seitenstetten Abbey date back to 1109, when it was founded as a monastic institution. Benedictine monks from Göttweig Abbey took over the administration of the new lordship in 1114, which was expanded through donations from Udalschalk in 1112 and later from Archbishop Wichmann von Seeburg around 1180. The abbey church was consecrated in 1116. Over the centuries, the abbey developed into an important ecclesiastical and economic entity, overseeing numerous parishes. Despite setbacks such as monastery fires in the 13th century and the challenges of the Reformation, which even saw a Protestant abbot, the abbey managed to endure and continues to exist today. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and, since 1690, to Saint Benedicta.
