Propstei Buchholz

The Priory Buchholz was first documented in 1135. It was established as a dependency of the Benedictine Abbey of Gladbach, primarily to supply wine, especially for mass. The Abbey of Gladbach owned vineyards here, which were cultivated until the 18th century. Throughout its history, there were frequent disputes with the abbots' bailiffs, who resided at Burg Brohl and financially burdened the priory. To ensure the survival of the remote priory, fishing rights, forests, and mills were transferred to it in 1262; only the vineyards remained in the possession of the mother monastery. During the Thirty Years' War, the priory was plundered by Lotharingian troops in 1644, leading to the impoverishment of the monastery and making the maintenance of the large church building impossible. In 1683, the western nave was demolished and replaced with a Baroque facade. In 1802, during the Coalition Wars and its affiliation with the French Département Rhin-et-Moselle, the priory was dissolved. The buildings were sold and subsequently used as a farm, with the church serving as a barn and its main apse being demolished. After a lightning strike and fire in 1951, extensive restoration work was carried out from 1972 to 1990.

The former monastery is located in the municipality of Burgbrohl in the Ahrweiler district, situated in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

The former monastery buildings are currently used as a farm. The partially preserved church, considered one of the earliest vaulted basilicas in the Rhineland, is a protected cultural monument. Inside, the crossing with its groin vault, the eastern nave bay, and the southern apse of the transept are still preserved. Additionally, blind triforia with columns, capitals, and round arches, as well as a frieze of leaf tendrils, can be found there.
