Kloster Weitenau

The founding of Weitenau Monastery is dated around the year 1100. Originally established as a private church by the Barons of Wart, it was later transferred to St. Blasien Abbey, which established a Benedictine priory here. The monastery church was initially dedicated to Saint Gangolf but received the patronage of Mary after 1344. In 1525, the monastery was plundered during the Peasants' War, and the monks were expelled. With the introduction of the Reformation in the Markgräflerland, the monastery was dissolved between 1557 and 1560, and the monastery church was converted into an Evangelical parish church.

The monastic complex is situated in a valley between the towns of Steinen and Schlächtenhaus, directly on a country road at the edge of the forest. It is part of the Lörrach district in Baden-Württemberg.

The historic buildings of the former monastery have undergone several renovations and reuses over the centuries. Since 1971, after extensive alterations, the complex has served as a specialized clinic. The original monastery church was secularized in the late 19th century and divided into two floors, with some Gothic windows preserved.
