Benediktinerpriorat Oberried

The origins of the monastery date back to 1237, when it was founded as a branch of the Cistercian convent of Günterstal. After only twelve years, the settlement was abandoned. In 1252, it was re-established by the Wilhelmites, who reopened the monastery under the name "Mariakron". However, this community also initially left the secluded location. It was not until 1266 that the monastery was permanently established under the leadership of Johannes von Urberg. At the end of the 14th century and again in 1412, the complex was severely damaged by fires. In 1507, the forest monastery was abandoned in favor of an urban settlement. After the cession of Freiburg to France in 1679, the Wilhelmites returned, but the monastery was immediately destroyed. Between 1684 and 1687, the Wilhelmites erected new monastic buildings and a church in the village of Oberried. From 1725 until its dissolution in 1806, Oberried was a priory of the Benedictine monastery of St. Blasien.

The former monastery is located in the municipality of Oberried in the Breisgau Hochschwarzwald district, nestled in the landscape of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The existing monastic buildings and the church were constructed between 1684 and 1687 and bear witness to the later phase of the monastery's history.
