Kloster Wimmelburg

The origins of Wimmelburg Monastery date back to before 1038. It was founded as a Benedictine abbey and dedicated to Saint Cyriacus. Originally situated on a hill named Friedrichsberg, it was relocated in 1121 to the valley below the hill, as the initial location proved unfavorable. Between approximately 1130 and 1150, a large cruciform basilica was built there. In the 12th century, the monastery experienced a period of prosperity, receiving the right for its abbots to wear the miter in 1162, and also acquiring coinage rights. It developed into an important pilgrimage site, particularly for people seeking healing from epilepsy, as Saint Cyriacus, the patron saint, was attributed with healing powers. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was secularized between 1524 and 1558. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, it was plundered but not destroyed. Subsequently, it was converted into a comital office and an economic estate.

Wimmelburg Monastery is located in the municipality of Wimmelburg, west of Eisleben, in the Mansfeld-Südharz district of Saxony-Anhalt.

The still-preserved buildings of Wimmelburg Monastery, including the church, a manor house, and the chapter house, are listed as cultural monuments. The former monastery church now serves as the Protestant parish church of St. Cyriacus.
