Vornbach Abbey

Parish church, castle

The former Benedictine monastery of Vornbach, once a significant collegiate church, is located in the Bavarian city of Passau and is now protected as a historical monument. Situated at an elevation of approximately 319 meters above sea level, it is notable for its long history and the transformation of the monastery church into a parish church after secularization.

History+

The origins of Vornbach Monastery date back to the year 1001. Initially founded as a collegiate church, it was converted into a Benedictine monastery in 1094. The foundation was carried out by members of the noble family of Formbach. In the 12th century, the monastery merged with the nearby Vornbach Castle, which was subsequently replaced by a late Romanesque basilica. The monastery developed into a center of scribal art, where an elaborately illuminated Bible was created in 1421. In the 14th century, the abbey church received a new choir. A severe flood of the Inn River in 1438 caused the collapse of a monastery wing. The current Baroque church was built between 1630 and 1637, incorporating older structural elements. The abbey buildings were constructed around 1700, and the church received its late Baroque furnishings between 1728 and 1733. In 1803, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization process.
