Tholey Abbey

The first documented mention of Tholey Monastery dates back to the year 634. In this year, the Frankish nobleman Adalgisel Grimo bequeathed his property in Tholey, including the sacred sites he had established there, to the Diocese of Verdun. At his request, the Bishop of Trier sent clerics to Tholey and consecrated the church. This document is now considered the oldest surviving written record in the Rhineland. In the course of the 8th century, Benedictine monasticism was established in Tholey. The connection to the Diocese of Verdun shaped the monastery's history for centuries. In 1794, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization.

Tholey Monastery is located in the municipality of Tholey in Saarland, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 381 meters above sea level.

The current abbey church dates from the 13th century and is one of the early Gothic churches in Germany. It is known for its modern chancel windows, designed by Gerhard Richter, as well as other windows by the artist Mahbuba Maqsoodi. The monastery complex is a protected monument and a significant cultural heritage site of Saarland.
