Martinskloster

The origins of the complex trace back to a church, which, according to tradition, was founded in the 4th century by Martin of Tours. Archaeological findings from the 4th to 7th centuries support the assumption of early religious use of the site. In the 5th century, this original church was destroyed during the Migration Period. Around 587, it was rebuilt as St. Martin's Church by Bishop Magnerich of Trier. By the 10th century at the latest, the church became an abbey of the Benedictine order. In 882, the monastery suffered damage during Norman incursions but was rebuilt under Abbot Regino of Prüm in the late 9th century. After a period of expropriation and reoccupation by canons in the 10th century, Archbishop Theoderich I restored the rights of the Benedictines in 975, and Emperor Otto II confirmed the abbey's protection. St. Martin's Abbey was dissolved in 1802 under Napoleonic rule.

St. Martin's Monastery was located in Trier, a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was situated in the northwest of Trier's city center, directly on the banks of the Moselle river. The current street, Martinsufer, runs along the still-preserved historical buildings.

The preserved west wing of the former abbey building is now used as a student dormitory under the name "Martinskloster." A modern new building, which also served as a student dormitory, was demolished in 2020 and is to be replaced by another new construction.
