Benediktinerkloster St. Jakob

The former Benedictine monastery of St. Jakob, once situated just outside the city gates of Mainz, served for centuries as a significant religious center in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its establishment in the 11th century left a lasting mark on the region until its dissolution in the early 19th century.
History+
The initiative to found the Benedictine monastery of St. Jakob originated in 1050 with Archbishop Bardo of Mainz. However, its actual realization was carried out by his successor, Liutpold. A plateau south of the city of Mainz, known as “Mons Speciosus” for its beauty, was chosen as the site and later named Jakobsberg after the monastery's patron, the Apostle James the Elder. The new abbey became affiliated with the Gorze Reform movement, which aimed to renew monasticism in the 11th century. These reforms were championed by popes such as Leo IX, who held an important church council in Mainz in 1049. The monastery was consecrated in 1055, and Archbishop Liutpold was later buried there. The monastery continued to exist until its dissolution in 1802.
Location+
The former monastery was located on the Jakobsberg in the city of Mainz, which is part of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany.
On site+
Today, the Jakobsbergstraße monument zone and its block development serve as a reminder of the former monastery. The three-story apartment buildings at the corner of Jakobsbergstraße/Neutorstraße, which date back to 1791, bear witness to the monastery's former presence in this area.
