Benediktinerkloster Solnhofen

The monastery of Solnhofen was founded after the year 794 by the Benedictine abbey of Fulda. Prior to this, Saint Sola had been active in pastoral care in the region and bequeathed the properties entrusted to him to Fulda. Originally dedicated to Saint Sola, the patronage changed from the 830s onwards to include Salvator, Mary, Boniface, John the Baptist, and Peter. The monastic community of the Benedictines existed until 1533, when the monastery was dissolved during the Reformation. Various church buildings have been documented at the monastery site since approximately 650. The restored remains of the so-called Sola Basilica are among the oldest architectural monuments in Germany and are located north of the present-day parish church.
