Seligenstadt Abbey

cultural monument

The Benedictine Monastery of Seligenstadt, a prominent cultural monument in Hesse, shaped the Main region for centuries. Founded in the 9th century, the complex served as an important religious and economic center and today stands as a testament to medieval monastic culture.

History+

The origins of the monastery date back to 820, when Einhard, Charlemagne's biographer, received the settlement of "Obermulinheim" as a gift. Around 828, he founded the monastery of Seligenstadt there and, after the death of his wife Imma in 830, became its first abbot. Einhard transferred relics of the early Christian martyrs Marcellinus and Petrus to Seligenstadt to establish a cult of saints. Around the year 1000, the original collegiate church was converted into a Benedictine monastery. Until 1002, the monastery was imperial immediacy, before King Henry II enfeoffed it to Bishop Henry I of Würzburg. Emperor Henry III granted the monastery minting rights in 1045. In 1063, King Henry IV handed over the monastery as a proprietary monastery to the Archbishop of Mainz, in whose dominion it remained until its secularization in the early 19th century. From 1051 to 1122, the Archbishops of Mainz were also abbots of the monastery in personal union. From 1481, the monastery belonged to the Bursfelde Congregation.

Location+

The former monastery complex is located in Seligenstadt in the eastern district of Offenbach in Hesse, directly on the banks of the Main River. Historically situated on the edge of the city walls, it is now in the city center.
