Seeon Abbey

The monastery of Seeon was founded in 994 by Count Palatine Aribo I and his wife Adala, with Benedictine monks from Sankt Emmeram in Regensburg forming the first community. Already in the 10th century, a significant scriptorium was established here, producing manuscripts for its own needs and for other ecclesiastical institutions, including for Emperor Henry II. After a period as an imperial abbey, the monastery lost this status in 1201. Towards the end of the 11th century, a Romanesque new building was constructed, but it had a short lifespan. Around 1180, the church, largely preserved to this day with its characteristic apse, was erected. In the 15th century, the abbey church underwent a late Gothic transformation under Konrad Pürkhel. Abbot Martin II. Kötterlein initiated comprehensive reforms in the late 16th century, strengthening the monastery economically and spiritually. The unique Renaissance frescoes also date from this period. Following the secularization in 1803, the monastery was dissolved and converted into a castle, which served various purposes.

Kloster Seeon is located in the Klosterseeon district of the municipality of Seeon-Seebruck in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein, a few kilometers north of Lake Chiemsee. The complex is situated on an island in Klostersee at an elevation of approximately 537 meters above sea level.

The former abbey church now serves as a parish church. Since 1986, the monastery buildings have been utilized as a conference hotel and as a cultural and educational institution of the District of Upper Bavaria. Visitors can explore the renovated monastery cloister and admire significant artworks in the church, such as the high tomb of the founder Count Palatine Aribo I and the Renaissance frescoes. A copy of the famous Seeon Madonna is located in the high altar.
