Benediktinerkloster Schweinfurt

The monastery was founded around 1004 as a nunnery by Eilica, the widow of Berthold of Schweinfurt, following the Schweinfurt Feud. Around 1055, it transformed into a Benedictine monastery and was named Stella Petri. In 1112, the monastery's assets passed to the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt through inheritance. Between 1120 and 1177, monks from Bamberg are recorded here, and Burkard is mentioned as the first Benedictine abbot, who died in 1155. Bishop Otto of Eichstätt consecrated an All Saints' Chapel and two altars between 1183 and 1195. By 1263, the monastery was in a dilapidated state and, at the instigation of Bishop Iring von Reinstein-Homburg of Würzburg, was assigned to the Teutonic Order in 1283. The Teutonic Order fortified the complex due to its military significance, leading to conflicts with the Imperial City of Schweinfurt. In 1437, the city purchased the monastery castle and had it demolished.

The monastery castle was situated on the Peterstirn, an offshoot of the Hainberg, above the Main River in what is now the northeastern district of Schweinfurt. The area is approximately 25 meters above the Main at an elevation of 230 m above sea level. At the foot of the former monastery hill run the historic Mainleitenstraße and the Bamberg–Schweinfurt railway line.

Today, the Dahms winery is located on the former monastery grounds. In 1874, the so-called Sattler Buildings, in the Historicist style, were erected on the castle hill. Remnants of the Teutonic Order's fortifications are still preserved on the Sattler property.
