Scharnitz Abbey

The foundation of Scharnitz Monastery, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, occurred before the year 763 by the nobles Reginperht and Irminfried from the Huosi family. A central figure of this family was Poapo, whose name was also given to the noble district pagus Poapinta near Innsbruck, which was partly assigned to Scharnitz Monastery and later to Schlehdorf Monastery. The monastery was initially led by Archpriest Arbeo, who was appointed Bishop of Freising the following year. His successor as abbot was Atto. After a devastating major fire between 769 and 772, the monastery was relocated to Schlehdorf Monastery on Lake Kochel, possibly on the advice of Bishop Arbeo. During excavations in 1972, remarkable remains of the Benedictine complex were unearthed.

The former Scharnitz Monastery was situated in Klais, a locality in Bavaria, Germany. Its geographical position at approximately 936 meters above sea level characterized the site within the region of the Prince-Bishopric of Freising.

The remains of the former Benedictine monastery of Scharnitz are today primarily significant as an archaeological site. The findings discovered in 1972 provide insights into the early medieval monastic complex and bear witness to its former presence in the Bavarian landscape.
