Benediktinerkloster Neuenberg (Andreasberg)

The former Benedictine monastery of Neuenberg, also known as Andreasberg, is located in Fulda, Hesse. It was founded in 1023 and played a significant role in the Benedictine reform movement.
History+
The monastery of Neuenberg was founded in 1023 on the initiative of Abbot Richard von Amorbach, who was also buried in the monastery church. As a priory of the Benedictine monastery of Fulda, Neuenberg served as a center for implementing the Gorze monastic reform. The first prior was Bardo, a relative of Emperor Conrad II, who later became Archbishop of Mainz. The priory was considered one of Fulda's most important dependencies. In the 15th century, under Dean Franz von Böhmen, the monastery underwent another reform phase that also gained regional significance. A fire in 1441 destroyed large parts of the complex, and its reconstruction took several decades.
Location+
The monastery is situated at an elevation of approximately 256 meters above sea level in Fulda, a city in the Hesse region, Germany.
On site+
The original monastery church is now the parish church of St. Andreas in the Neuenberg district of Fulda. The tomb of the founding abbot, Richard von Amorbach, is preserved there to this day. Some architectural elements, such as the altar niche and the Gothic rib vault of the John Chapel, still bear witness to the historical structure.
