Monastery church

The former Benedictine monastery of Mönchsroth, situated in the Bavarian region of Ansbach, stands as a testament to medieval monastic culture. Although only the monastery church remains of the original complex, the place name itself refers to the historical significance of this spiritual center.

History+

The monastery of Mönchsroth was founded around 1130 by Hermann and Adala von Leiningen, together with Count Diemo von Prozelten. The endowment was later transferred to Hirsau Abbey, which was seeking new establishments in this region. Initially under imperial vogtei, this changed hands several times over time and came into the possession of the Counts of Oettingen in the 15th century. After being destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525, the monastery was rebuilt within a decade. A special privilege was granted to the prior in 1533 by Pope Clement VII, allowing him to wear a miter, ring, and staff. In the course of the Reformation, Mönchsroth Monastery was dissolved in 1558 by Ludwig von Oettingen.

Location+

Mönchsroth Monastery is located in the municipality of Mönchsroth in the district of Ansbach in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 437 meters above sea level.
