Cultural heritage D-4-73-159-16 in Rödental

The foundation of Mönchröden Monastery was confirmed in 1149 by Bishop Siegfried von Truhendingen of Würzburg, after Burgrave Hermann Sterker of Meißen had transferred his estates to the Diocese of Würzburg. The deed of gift listed numerous villages and hamlets that were assigned to the monastery. Originally consecrated to Saint Kilian as an episcopal proprietary monastery, Mönchröden was a rather small monastery with possessions in 45 localities and a community of no more than 20 monks. At the end of the 14th century, the monastery experienced a decline, which was overcome by Abbot Ulrich Wochner from 1446 through the Kastl Reform movement. Under his successor, Abbot Benedikt, the monastery joined the Bursfelde Congregation in 1485. The tenure of the last abbot, Nikolaus Hildebrand, was marked by extensive construction work. The Peasants' War spared the monastery. In the course of the Reformation, no new abbot was elected in 1526, and the formal dissolution of the monastery took place in 1531, eventually being converted into a princely monastic office in 1538.

Mönchröden Monastery is situated in the Mönchröden district of Rödental, a municipality in Bavaria, Germany. The complex is located at an altitude of approximately 332 meters above sea level.

The monastic complex is now a protected architectural monument. The refectory, originally built in 1516 as the monks' dining and living quarters, has served as an evangelical community center since 1980. The former monastery church, rebuilt in the late Gothic style in the 15th century and damaged during the Thirty Years' War, has been the Evangelical-Lutheran Christ Church since 1971. It features a recessed choir with a star vault and a ribbed corner vault in the nave. In the choir, three tomb slabs commemorate former abbots. The abbot's house, also known as the Hohes Haus, was probably built in the 12th/13th century and was redesigned and extended in the late Gothic style in the early 16th century after a fire.
