Michelfeld Abbey

The monastery of Michelfeld was founded in 1119 by Bishop Otto I of Bamberg, who also sought to counter territorial claims. The first Benedictine monks came from Michelsberg Abbey. Originally conceived as a double monastery, a convent for nuns also existed a few hundred meters away in Pferrach. As early as 1121, the monastic site was elevated to a parish when Bishop Otto donated St. Leonhard's Church to the monastery. The bishop's rights as sovereign, including asset management and the appointment of the abbot, were confirmed by Pope Calixt II in 1123. In 1134, Bishop Otto himself assumed leadership as abbot in a personal union. Over time, the abbots received various insignia of their dignity, including gloves and pontifical shoes from 1145 and the mitre from 1247. The relocation of the Michelfeld market to Auerbach in 1144, over which the monastery exercised lower jurisdiction, led to significant economic prosperity. In 1378, the abbey was severely damaged by a fire. The Bavarian-Bohemian War (1400–1401) and the Hussite Wars in the 15th century, particularly in 1420 and 1430, also left severe devastation, forcing the monks to flee and beg. Despite these setbacks, an abbatial election took place in 1436, and under Abbot Hartung Pfersfelder, the Kastl Reform was introduced, enabling economic recovery and the reconstruction of the fortifications.

The former Benedictine monastery of Michelfeld is located in the Amberg-Sulzbach district in Bavaria, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 410 meters above sea level.

Today, the former monastery building serves as an institution of the Regens-Wagner Foundation.
