St. Dionysius

The origins of the complex date back to the 9th century. Probably, the so-called Brachau Monastery, a small Benedictine monastery, was located here, its existence documented for the year 823. It is presumed that the monastery played a role in salt production. In the Middle Ages, a stone church with an apse was built on this site, replacing an earlier wooden structure from the 8th century. A church dedicated to St. Dionysius is documented in the 14th century. At the beginning or end of the 16th century, the church became a ruin for unknown reasons. The last mention of the church dates to 1503. In the mid-19th century, the ruin, which showed traces of a chapel, was described by district judge Johann Wilhelm Rost. Archaeological excavations carried out by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation between 1989 and 1991 uncovered the foundations of a simple wooden hall church and an extensive cemetery with over 100 skeletons.

The church ruin is located in Bavaria, Germany, near Kleinbrach in Lower Franconia. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 211 meters above sea level.

Today, the reconstructed floor plans of the former church are accessible to the public and bear witness to the long history of this place.
