Attel Abbey

The founding of Attel Monastery by Count Arnold von Dießen-Andechs took place around 1037, but the community did not last long. The monastery was re-established in 1137 under Count Engelbert von Limburg, and the first Romanesque basilica also dates from this period. The abbey experienced a flourishing period from the mid-15th century with the introduction of the Melk Reform. In 1803, the monastery was dissolved during secularization. The buildings were partially demolished or privatized. From 1874, the Brothers of Mercy took over the remaining buildings and used them for the care of people with disabilities. During the National Socialist era, the institution was dissolved in 1940, and numerous patients fell victim to the euthanasia program. After World War II, the complex served as a military hospital and later as a camp for displaced persons, before care for people with disabilities resumed in 1951.

The former Benedictine monastery of Attel is located in the town of Wasserburg am Inn, in the Rosenheim district of Bavaria. The complex is situated at an elevation of approximately 477 meters above sea level.

The former abbey church of St. Michael now serves as the parish church for the Attel parish within the Edling pastoral association. The Baroque church, built from 1713 and consecrated in 1715, replaced a Romanesque predecessor and was decorated in the Rococo style in the following decades. The preserved monastery buildings are now used by the Attl Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting people with disabilities.
