Kloster Groß Ammensleben

The monastery's origins date back to 1110, when Theoderich II of Ammensleben and his wife endowed a church. Ten years later, this developed into an Augustinian canons' collegiate church, which was placed under papal protection in 1124. As early as 1127, the proprietary church passed to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg. In 1129, the collegiate church was converted into a Benedictine monastery, with its first monks coming from Berge Abbey in Magdeburg and being influenced by the Hirsau Reform. The monastic church was consecrated in 1135, and the monastery was elevated to the rank of an abbey. A fire in 1193 destroyed large parts of the church, but it was subsequently rebuilt. After the founding family died out in 1208, the Counts of Regenstein assumed the Vogt rights, which Abbot Mourin repurchased in 1273, leading to economic decline. In 1461, the abbey joined the Bursfelde Congregation to initiate a reform of monastic life, regaining its independence in 1470. In the 16th century, the monastery successfully resisted attempts at Reformation and survived the Peasants' War unscathed. Despite the directive to employ a Protestant preacher and hold Protestant services from 1580 onwards, the monastery remained Catholic. During the Thirty Years' War, the monks suffered under imperial troops, but the Peace of Westphalia ensured its continued existence and Catholic denomination. In 1804, the monastery was secularized, and the former abbey church has since served as a Catholic parish church.

Ammensleben Monastery is located in the Börde region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 72 meters above sea level.

The former abbey church is now the Catholic parish church of Groß Ammensleben and is part of the Romanesque Road. Most of the monastic buildings were demolished in the 19th century.
