The origins of Thulba as a donation site to the Abbey of Fulda are documented as early as the 8th century. A first church consecration took place in 816. In the 12th century, specifically 1127, Gerlach von Herlingsberg and his wife transferred estates for the establishment of a monastery. Contrary to the original intention of founding a male monastery, Abbot Heinrich I populated the new institution with Benedictine nuns. At the same time, the abbey church of St. Lambertus was built. Pope Innocent II confirmed the foundation in 1141. The convent experienced a significant increase in possessions and rights through further donations. In the 16th century, the Peasants' War devastated the complex, and the remaining nuns sought refuge in Fulda. Despite later efforts for restoration, the convent was officially dissolved in 1626. However, administration by a provostship continued until secularization in 1802.

After their abandonment, the original convent buildings served as a quarry for centuries, so only a few remains are preserved. The provostry, which was rebuilt from 1701, now shapes the townscape alongside the church and houses, among other things, the local school. The stepped-gable house, an older provostry building, is now used by the community.
