Benediktinerinnenkloster Tauberbischofsheim

The Benedictine convent in Tauberbischofsheim was founded in 735 by Saint Boniface, who appointed his relative Lioba as its first abbess. Under her leadership, the convent developed into an important center for education and culture throughout the lower Main valley region. The existence of the convent and the town of Bischofsheim was documented in 836 in the biography of Saint Lioba. The exact date of the Benedictine convent's dissolution is unknown. During restoration work on the Lioba Church in 1968, remains of walls from a presumed Carolingian church and graves were discovered, interpreted as remnants of the original 8th-century convent.

The convent is situated in Tauberbischofsheim, a town in the Main-Tauber district in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The successor buildings of the original women's convent are still preserved today. The convent courtyard is enclosed by three buildings, including the former dormitory. The former convent church, originally dedicated to Saint Elisabeth and renamed Lioba Church in the 17th century after the transfer of Lioba relics, adjoins the market square. Parts of the Tauberbischofsheim city administration are now housed in the renovated buildings of the convent courtyard.
